38 Henry Cheney Bell Face Claw Hammer with the original Cheney Nail Holding Device in Excellent Condition! No chips to the hammer head noticeable dings to the cheeks or over strikes to the neck of the hammer or handle.

The under side of the claws retain most of the black enameled finish. The wedge is of the "Cheney Safety Wedge" type. The handle is missing the decal but retains most of the original finish with the bottom stamped "38". Before Henry Cheney introduced the ball bearing holding system the Nailer had a slot under the claws.

This patent was taken out July 4th, 1871 and this is the nailing device on this hammer (see pictures). This particular hammer has the Henry Cheney Safety First Wedge System - U. Patent 1,600,960 (Sept 21st, 1926). Given that the company moved to the ball bearing nail holding device in 1927 I'd place the hammer somewhere around 1926/1927 time frame. In summary a very rare and fine Henry Cheney hammer and highly collectable!
